Re-Emergence in Belgium

Following the success of the EMERGENCE Project, the Higher Institute for Labour Studies (HIVA) will carry out additional research on the diffusion of eWork in Belgium. This research is sponsored by the Belgian Federal Office for Scientific and Cultural Affairs and will be entitled: ‘Made at a distance: research into the diffusion, conditions and implications of telework’. In this work, HIVA will collaborate closely with the Department of Sociology at the Catholic University of Leuven and the Service Télématique et Communication at the Free University of Brussels.

The project will extend the EMERGENCE employer survey to 300 enterprises with fewer than 50 employees. When combined with the results from the main EMERGENCE survey from larger establishments, this will build up a comprehensive picture of eWork practices across the entire Belgian economy.

The project will not only complement the EMERGENCE survey (and the supplementary small firm surveys in Ireland and Denmark) with observations on small firms in Belgium. It will also carry out additional case studies aimed at obtaining a deeper understanding of eWork practices in the field.
