Developing Cognitive Applications in Cyberspace

Results from the EMERGENCE survey show that over four out of ten European employers buy in knowledge-based information services from external suppliers – with one in twenty going outside their national borders to find the skills and quality they need. But how do suppliers showcase their talents to tap into this new market?

Cognitive Applications is an innovative company which supplies state-of-the-art website solutions to customers across Europe and in the United States and has developed a world-wide reputation for edgy and avant-garde design. Started by the University of Sussex’s School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences in 1985, the company was bought out by its employees in 1988 and now employs 16 permanent staff at its Brighton base plus one US-based associate, as well as tapping into a network of gifted freelances.

The company established its reputation on large, bespoke, interactive multimedia projects for clients like the National Gallery in the UK, for whom only the highest artistic standards will do, building up close long-term partnerships with their customers, for whom they often continue to provide maintenance after initial development work is complete. The success of these projects brought them to the attention of other clients as far afield as the USA, Japan, and the Czech Republic.

Collaboration between Cognitive Applications team members, their subcontractors and their clients is facilitated by the use of a secure extranet with a separate space for each project which makes it easy to share information in real time. This means that a team of people can work collaboratively and concurrently regardless of where they are based, making it easy, for instance, for staff to work from home when they feel like it and ensuring the full involvement of clients.
