Networking for excellence

The experience of working closely together in the ever-extending multi-disciplinary international research networks that surround the EMERGENCE project has made us very aware of the diversity of research practices and approaches that exist around the world. In 2000, this produced a debate amongst some of the EMERGENCE partners about how to ensure common understandings and standards for professional and ethical conduct in socio-economic research, in a global information society.

These discussions led to the development of the RESPECT project, in which a group of EMERGENCE partners (IES, HIVA, FORBA and ISB) joined forces with distinguished legal experts, CRID and ITM from the ECLIP project and the Social Research Association to develop some concrete guidelines covering research ethics, intellectual property, data protection, professional standards and professional qualifications.
