The role of eWork in regional development

This part of the background to eWork and regional development examines the specific issues surrounding eWork as part of regional development within an information society and knowledge economy context. There is much evidence that points to the significant contribution that ICT is making to two profound changes that have affected work over the last two decades, particularly in a knowledge economy context:

  • at micro level, both in terms of the process and organisation of work and of changing skill and competence requirements

  • at macro level in terms of labour markets.

These changes have given rise to a new geography of work at every level of analysis — intra-firm, intra-regional, national, global. The ability of individual regions to adapt to these changes appears to contribute strongly to their success in securing sustainable regional development.

There are four sub-parts:

  Work processes and work organisation

  eWork skills and knowledge management

  Labour markets and regional development

  The regional impact of eWork
